Natrol is one of the most popular manufacturers of melatonin supplements, and their fast dissolve formulas are among their best known. But as I outlined in my review of Natrol’s fast dissolve melatonin, there are some definite issues beyond the fact that I didn’t find it particularly effective. And it all comes down to ingredients.
First, while the bottle states the supplement is 100% vegetarian, it DOES contain wheat and soy, so it could be unsuitable for people sensitive to those fairly common allergens. The fast dissolve formula requires binders, flavors, and ingredients you may not normally see in a standard melatonin supplement, and apparently some of these ingredients are derived from wheat and soy. They aren’t necessarily the only supplement company to include these sorts of ingredients in their melatonin formulas, however. So it’s a good reminder to double-check the label on even the most innocuous supplements, especially if you have food allergies.
As far as standalone, single active-ingredient melatonin supplements, I much preferred Life Extension’s timed release formula (read my full review on that here). These are also vegetarian tablets without so many mystery ingredients.
For me, the gimmick of quick-dissolve tablets isn’t worth it when there are other supplements that help me get significantly better rest.
